Double Cord Tote Hardcopy 1:3A $5.99 Double Cord Tote Hardcopy

The third and last lesson in the first level. Hard copy mail order delivered to your home.

Now we're getting into needing some accurate stitching. Most beginners are a little wobbly at first, just like they are when learning to ride a bicycle. If the stitching on the Tote is wobbly, it will have to be ripped out and done again because the cords won't fit through the casings. So, we wait to make the Tote until after we've had some practice with the Baby Blanket and the Pillow Case. Guess what? No ripping. And, of course, this ALSO ends up going on those field trips, too!

Approximate Time

An average student can complete the Double Cord Tote project in this Sewing Lesson Module in about 3 hours.

Double Cord Tote Ebook 1:3A-e $3.99 Double Cord Tote Ebook

V-Top and Skirt 21 $15.00 V-Top and Skirt

The first lesson in the second level.

The V-top has a V-shaped neckline front and back, and extended dolman sleeves.

The Skirt has elastic waistline and back slit with bow accent.

What a super-simple way to make your very first clothing project! All the seams are straight, the notches you need to match are big and easy to find. Now that you've gotten really good at hemming from Level One, you can start making your hems narrow and more straightly stitched. It's up to you to guide your work accurately for the very best garment you can make. You don't need to work hard, you only need to pay attention and sew carefully. Help the fabric flow through your sewing machine and you'll get the hang of it quickly.

Approximate Time

An average student can complete the two projects in this Sewing Lesson Module in about 5 hours each.

T-Top and Pants 22 $15.00 T-Top and Pants

The second lesson in the second level.

The T-top has a square neckline front and back with topstitching and extended cap sleeves.

The Pants have elastic waistline and a generous cut through the hips and inseam.

You will find your first lesson in sewing curved seams to be a pleasure. We've designed all the curves to be very gently so they are easier to sew around. In the next lesson, the Shorts, they will be a little more curvy so this is good practice for you. The simple topstitching exercise for the T-Top prepares you for understitching in Level Four and Jeans in Level Six. Practice now with easy projects so that you will be really good at it later!

Approximate Time

An average student can complete the two projects in this Sewing Lesson Module in about 5 hours each.

Learn To Use The Serger 30 $11.00 Learn To Use The Serger

The first lesson to complete to become familiar with the use, threading, operation and troubleshooting of a three-thread serger before beginning Level Three Projects. Hard copy mail order delivered to your home.

This Lesson Module is a big help for those who have sergers. It is completely optional to the entire DIRECTIONS series if you have only a sewing machine. You should be aware that there are SkillCards in this Lesson and they are numbered and referred to in throughout the rest of the DIRECTIONS series. It may look like your SkillCard Reference Organizer is "missing pages" but if you don't have a serger you don't need those pages anyhow. But, you might like them just so you have a complete set. It's up to you.

Approximate Time

An average student can complete this Sewing Lesson Module in about 2 hours.

Tank and Shorts 31 $15.00 Tank and Shorts

The first lesson in the third level.

This tank and shorts are constructed with easy skills similar to those used in Level 2. This allows the student to focus only on the new methods of working with knit fabrics without having to learn new construction techniques at the same time.

The Tank is cut modestly through the neck and armhole, with fitting instructions for seam adjustments.

The Shorts are plain and comfy, with an elastic waist casing.

Approximate Time

An average student can complete the two projects in this Sewing Lesson Module in about 4 hours each.

Big Shirt and Pegged Pants 32 $15.00 Big Shirt and Pegged Pants

The second lesson in the third level.

The Big Shirt is generously cut through the chest and armholes. The neck and wrists have a self-band applied in the round.

The Pegged Pants feature a well-taper leg.. The waistline is finished with a one-step elastic casing.

Approximate Time

An average student can complete the two projects in this Sewing Lesson Module in about 4 hours each.

Crop Top and A-Line Skirt 33 $15.00 Crop Top and A-Line Skirt

The third lesson in the third level.

The styling of the crop top will be familiar as the student repeats the raglan sleeve shapes from Level 2, Lesson 3. This simple, open-neck design features double needle hems on all edges.

The A-line skirt in 4 gores features a just below the knee lenght and a new elastic application - the elastic is encased in a separate band.

Another new skill introduced in this lesson is learning about rotary cutters.

Approximate Time

An average student can complete the two projects in this Sewing Lesson Module in about 4 hours each.

Sport Top and Bike Shorts 34 $15.00 Sport Top and Bike Shorts

The fourth and last lesson in the third level.

If you're the athletic type, you totally need to learn how to sew with super-stretch lycra fabrics. This sporty outfit is just the greatest for exercise, tumbling, gymnastics, bike riding, rollerskating, and even swimming if you choose the right fabrics. And it's pretty much super-comfy and nice for lounging around on a sunny afternoon for those of us who are less athletically inclined.

The sport top is cut close to make use of lycra's ability to stretch. The armholes and neckline are low, but modest. The Bike Short has a molded fanny seam that allows a flat front with no center front seam. Smooth looking AND comfortable!

New skills learned while sewing both garments include sewing super-stretchy seams and applying stitched-on elastic.

A super bonus with this pattern: it is specifically designed so that the Sport Top pattern can be joined with the Bike Short pattern to make a fab unitard, but the student will miss out on the lesson of stitched-on elastic. It is better to make the unitard as a second project. Advanced knit sewing projects use stitched-on elastic in many places and many ways. Better to learn how to do it right with this carefully illustrated lesson. Another bonus is the fact that this exact pattern can be used with white, pink or colorful cotton lycra for wonderful undies! It's all about fabric choice when you can sew your own.

Approximate Time

An average student can complete the two projects in this Sewing Lesson Module in about 4-1/2 hours each.

Sleep Shirt and Robe 41 $17.00 Sleep Shirt and Robe

The first lesson in the fourth level.

The NightShirt has short raglan sleeves which can be finished with or without elastic at the arm. The narrow elastic around the neck helps students learn to work with smaller parts than they've been used to with the wide waist elastic.

The robe is comfy and long. Side-seam pockets are our first pocket to learn. The belt teaches tube turning techniques.

Both projects teach the student to make the inside of the garment look as nice as the outside, one of the important goals of Level 4 "green group" lessons.

Approximate Time

An average student can complete the two projects in this Sewing Lesson Module in about 7 hours each.

Scoop Neck Top and Pocket Pants 42 $17.00 Scoop Neck Top and Pocket Pants

The second lesson in the fourth level.

The Scoop Neck Top features a proper facing, with interfacing, trimming, clipping, and understitching.

The Pants have their side seam pockets sewn as a separate piece, just a little harder than the pocket in Level 4, Lesson 1.

Both projects teach the student to make the inside of the garment look as nice as the outside, one of the important goals of Level 4 "green group" lessons.

Approximate Time

An average student can complete the two projects in this Sewing Lesson Module in about 7 hours each.

Vest and Sport Shorts 43 $17.00 Vest and Sport Shorts

The third and last lesson in the fourth level.

The Vest is a simple unlined style that lends itself well to flat fell seams.

The Shorts have a style like soccer shorts, with a slit on the side seam. The pockets are half-welt style placed on the side seam. All seams are flat felled.

Both projects teach the student to make the inside of the garment look as nice as the outside, one of the important goals of Level 4 "green group" lessons.

This outfit really does wash up just fine in the recommended satin - it has a sand-washed silk look. IMPORTANT! DO NOT buy the 'washable' poly satin, or any other polyester fabrics for this project. They don't press well and it makes felling the seams a miserable task. We know. We tried.

Approximate Time

An average student can complete the two projects in this Sewing Lesson Module in about 7 hours each.

How to Buy a Children's Sewing Machine Ebook 76-e $5.99 How to Buy a Children's Sewing Machine Ebook

The definitive guide to buying a starter sewing machine for your sewing student. Which machine really IS the best sewing machine for a beginner?

Fortunately, you will find similar, basic features for about US$200-500 in White, New Home/Jenome, Viking, Brother, Husqvarna, Simplicity, Riccar, Singer, Pfaff, etc. Sewing Machines are SO dependable these days! My standard recommendation is to buy from the dealership where you like the people -you\'ll want friendly folks to talk to after the sale!

You will also find disposable sewing machines in the $79-$150 range. No, REALLY, it's true! Disposable! When they break, which they will because of all the plastic low-tolerance parts inside, you simply throw it away and buy another! You didn't really think you were going to get a super precision fine quality sewing machines for 100-bucks did you?

Some places sell little child's play toy sewing machines in the $20-50 range which, although fun to play with and darned cute, are about worthless for any real sewing. After all, they are sold as a TOY. If it makes a chain stitch, it's not much good for beginner sewing lessons Would you have your child taking piano lessons on a toy piano? plinka-tink-tink. I didn't think so.

You might need more thorough information and research before buying a machine. I have prepared a full length report just for you on how to buy a sewing machine. It covers pricing, features, shopping, and warranties. There is a complete section on how to test drive a sewing machine, especially valuable if you know very little about sewing right now. And, of course, the !MOST! important question to ask your dealer or salesperson, and it's not price. For the same amount of money, you can buy a sewing machine that will last 4 months, or 20 years. Let me help you find out how!

There is also a complete analysis section for each of five different sewing machines: the Viking "sew cute" Toy Sewing Machine (also applies to the Singer Toy Sewing Machine and any other chain-stitch toy), and one on the Simplicity so5 "quilt-n-sew", the White "mighty mender", the Simplicity "sew precious", and the Pfaff "Hobby 741". Some of these machines are on my "do not buy" list, and I tell you exactly why to avoid them. None of these machines are availabe for sale from us. Each section contains a description, pictures (including the innards - and won\'t you be AMAZED at what you see inside some of these machine!), checklist/scorecard, and my personal opinion of the machine as to its suitability for educational purposes. 61 pages, color. Requires Acrobat Reader.

Covers 5 essentials, 8 avoids, AND provides you with a shopping evaluation checklist. Pdf ebook; instant download. This report will save you hundreds of dollars and help you avoid a bad purchase when shopping for a sewing machine for your student child. Learn how to judge a sewing machine for the balance of price, features and qualities that is best for your and your family. Your ebook access link will be available in your Account History immediately following completion of your order.
Note: You must already have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your computer.

YOU MUST FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS FOR YOUR GIFT -Please accept my advance apologies that it's somewhat futzy but we are not in the business of free products and so have no need of spending a lot of money on a really cool free ebook delivery system. We are, however, big fans of The Old Schoolhouse Magazine! We get all tingly inside whenever we can help home school folks add sewing education to their day.

Here are the two ebooks we are including in the Birthday Bash Gift Bag for readers of The Old Schoolhouse Magazine. You will need the Coupon Code given to you in your Gift Bag to offset the $9.98 cost of the ebooks back to ZERO. You may also add other items to your order without affecting the free gift as long as you use the coupon code. The coupon can only be used for these two ebooks.

To claim your free gift, you will put each ebook you want into your shopping cart separately, then checkout with your coupon code.

You can see the full description of these two ebooks at their product page. When you get to the product page, use the "add to cart" button ON THAT PAGE to add each ebook separately to your cart. You can choose either ebook, or both ebooks as your Birthday Bash Gift.

for "Teach Your Child To Sew" click here

for "How To Buy A Student Sewing Machine" click here

Both these items can be found in our category "Add On Accessories". The free gift coupon will work whether you start here or there as long as you use the individual product page to add them to your cart.

Thank you for supporting Home Schooling and taking good care of your kids and their education, your way! These two ebooks will get you off to a great start of adding a sewing curriculum (I do hope you choose DIRECTIONS-ShowMeSew) to your homeschool lessons.
